A stylish hat can transform an outfit. But a custom-made hat can transform you. Spend a fascinating afternoon exploring the milliner’s art and the magic of hats—for both women and men—as you create a one-of-a-kind topper to stand out at spring and summer events.

The workshop is led by milliner Anthony Gaskins, whose Georgetown Park shop The Hattery was a longtime mecca for hat lovers, and whose high-end creations have been worn by celebrities, royalty, and first ladies. He introduces the basics of hat making as he guides participants in choosing the perfect hat from a selection of base shapes and colors ready for design choices. They learn to block these millinery-felt and straw materials using traditional hat forms, and steam them to shape a custom fit.

They then choose from a range of traditional embellishments as they learn the techniques needed to complete their creations using ribbon, fabric, straw braid, veiling, and millinery flowers. The result: a unique made-for-you hat to be worn with pride. Basic hand-sewing skills are helpful, but not required.

The ticket price includes a workshop fee of $100 that covers all hat-making materials.
