Claude Monet captured the fleeting effects of natural light with seeming ease: water that sparkles, wind you can feel, and colors that sing. But how exactly did he put paint to canvas to create them?
Through lectures, demonstrations, and painting exercises, students learn about and put into practice Monet’s methods, materials, and brushwork. Special emphasis is placed on examining 19th-century color theory as it relates to impressionistic depictions of light and shadow, well as how Monet used complementary colors to create visual effects.
Work by friends and contemporaries of Monet’s, such as Renoir and Pissarro, is also examined as part of an exploration of the larger impressionist movement and as a way to compare and contrast the artist’s signature style.
In studio sessions, students put into practice Monet’s methods to create their own impressionist-style masterpiece. The objective of the class is not to copy the style of a famous artist, but to learn skills that can be utilized in your own work.
This class is suitable for everyone from beginning through advanced students. Working in oil paints is preferred, but students may work in acrylic if they choose.
