She prepares for each book with extensive research, sometimes investigating medical, scientific, and ethical issues. Her newest novel, A Spark of Light, counts backward through the hours of a standoff at a women’s reproductive health services clinic when a gunman bursts in and opens fire, taking all inside hostage.
