The tour includes a boat ride on Miss Lizzy

The 2,650 acres of forest, farmland, wetlands, and shoreline that make up the Edgewater, Maryland, headquarters of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) are the site of some of the longest-running environmental projects in the world. SERC’s open house offers a once-a-year opportunity for the public to explore environmental science through a close-up look at the facility’s programs (particularly those focusing on the Chesapeake) and by meeting scientists who discuss the details of their work.

Get the most out of the day on a tour that includes round-trip transportation to SERC, an introduction to the facility by a staff member, a box lunch, and a reserved cruise on the Rhode River. Tour participants also get an exclusive look at a facility not open to the public, the Mathias Lab, a LEED Platinum-certified building that is the Smithsonian’s most environmentally sustainable to date. The open house also includes hands-on activities, music, a photo booth, and plenty of tips on living a greener life.

Fringe stop at about 9:30 a.m.
