You’ve spent considerable time and money putting together what you hoped would be a pleasurable and memorable vacation. But, surprisingly, your getaway wasn’t as fun, meaningful, and stress-free as planned. Was there a missing element to your planning?

Jaime Kurtz, associate professor of psychology at James Madison University, applies the ever-growing body of research on happiness and decision-making to offer practical advice on how to enhance your travels. An avid explorer, study-abroad instructor, teacher, and happiness researcher, Kurtz discusses how anyone who has a vacation in their future —whether to a local beach or a foreign country—can craft a more meaningful, fulfilling, and joyful travel experience.

Kurtz provides guidance on topics such as how to design the perfect trip for your personality; boost your excitement before your vacation even begins; and actively immerse yourself in a new place while unplugging from your technological ties to home. She offers tips on getting the most from your precious travel dollars; slowing down and savoring travel's special moments; and easing back into everyday life feeling refreshed and satisfied. She even explains how the lessons learned from vacationing can turn you into a happy traveler at home as you explore the world of your own neighborhood, city, or state.

Kurtz’s book, The Happy Traveler: Unpacking the Secrets of Better Vacations (Oxford University Press) is available for sale and signing.
