Please Note: This class has an updated adjusted schedule (originally Jan. 9 to Feb. 6, 2019; later rescheduled to Jan. 23 to Feb. 20, 2019).

The January 23 session of this class will take place at Capital Gallery West Building, 600 Maryland Ave SW, Suite 100W, Washington, DC 20024, 1st floor training/conference room. Location and travel details below:

  • If you choose to take Metro, the closest Metro station is L'Enfant Plaza (Yellow/Green/Orange/Blue/Silver lines). Follow the exit for Maryland Ave & 7th St. Take the escalator up and enter the building directly ahead of you.
  • If you choose to drive, there is metered street parking available.
  • Since you will be entering the building after hours, you will have to provide proper identification to the security staff located in the building’s lobby. The conference room is on the first floor across from the guard desk. A Smithsonian Associates staff member will be there to help you find the room.

The balance of tension in an image is fundamental in photography: When achieved successfully, well-made visual relationships are created. This course offers participants a better understanding of compositional elements and how best to apply them. Emphasis is placed on practices that promote taking better and more unique photographs, including simplicity, balance, and using natural lighting conditions. Weekly lectures and assignments feature topics including extended shutter speeds, light graffiti, bokeh templates, and macro photography.

Students should have an understanding of basic camera operation. They provide their own cameras and may work in the format of their choice. Work is reviewed digitally. Be sure to bring a portable drive to share images in class.

Instructor: Joe Yablonsky
